A very life-like depiction of me reading google reviews.

As a veterinarian, my primary goal is to care for animals and support the families who love them. Every decision I make is with the best interest of my patients in mind, but sometimes it feels like I can’t win. On one hand, if I recommend extensive testing and find nothing serious, clients can feel frustrated about unnecessary spending. On the other hand, when I try to approach care more conservatively to prevent undue costs, there’s the risk that something serious is missed. Balancing these two extremes is one of the most challenging parts of my profession.

The Tightrope of Decision-Making

When a pet comes in for care, I assess the symptoms presented, perform a physical exam, and discuss the case with the owner. From there, I make recommendations based on the information available at the time. However, veterinary medicine is not always straightforward. Many conditions can mimic one another or progress in unpredictable ways, which makes every case unique.

Take, for example, a kitten who presents with conjunctivitis (eye irritation) but no other symptoms. In such cases, I may treat the obvious issue with appropriate care while advising the owner to monitor for changes. For some owners, this is exactly what they want—a targeted approach that avoids unnecessary costs. For others, this can feel like I didn’t do enough. If I had pushed for extensive diagnostics and nothing serious was found, that too could be met with frustration.

This is the dilemma I face daily: trying to balance thorough care with practicality, all while considering the financial and emotional burden on pet owners.

When Things Take an Unexpected Turn

One of the hardest parts of this profession is when an unexpected outcome occurs. There are diseases, like feline parvovirus, that can progress rapidly and show only subtle signs early on. In hindsight, it’s easy to wonder if more could have been done, but at the time of an exam, the clinical picture might not point to such a serious issue.

For instance, a kitten with only conjunctivitis and no fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy might not warrant an immediate full workup. It’s heartbreaking when a condition like parvovirus reveals itself later in its course, and I deeply empathize with the families who are left feeling blindsided.

The Catch-22 of Veterinary Medicine

Veterinary medicine often feels like walking a tightrope. If I recommend diagnostics for every mild symptom, I risk upsetting clients who feel their money was wasted if nothing significant is found. But when I take a conservative approach to spare undue spending, there’s always the possibility that something serious might be missed.

This leaves me feeling like I can’t win. It’s emotionally draining, knowing that despite my best efforts, someone may still feel dissatisfied or upset. I care deeply about every patient and every family I work with, and these feelings weigh heavily on me long after the appointment is over.

Why Communication is Key

One way I try to navigate this challenge is by maintaining open and honest communication with pet owners. I always explain my recommendations and the reasoning behind them. If I take a conservative approach, I stress the importance of monitoring symptoms closely and returning for a recheck if anything changes or doesn’t improve.

Follow-up care is essential in veterinary medicine because conditions can evolve quickly. When pet owners partner with us and stay vigilant, it can make all the difference in catching and addressing an issue early.
